The Sleep Store recommends following a structured routine from approximately 4 months old. At this point the majority of babies can sleep through the night and a structured routine is one of the most effective ways to achieve this.
Prior to 4 months, a structured routine may be of help but not all babies are capable of staying awake for the periods of time specified. The EASY routine outlined in Secrets of the Baby Whisperer is excellent for newborns, and can be a more relaxed way to start baby sleeping and feeding in a routine.
Please note - This book contains a settling technique which involves leaving baby to self-settle for a period of time, based on their age. This can involve leaving baby to cry, so please be aware of that prior to purchasing this book.
However the routine information is this book is excellent, and good routine is important to older babies regardless to how you teach your baby to self-settle. If you aren't comfortable with leaving your baby to cry, we recommend you combine the routine information from Save Our Sleep with a different settling technique, such as The No Cry Sleep Solution.
