About the Dolphin Clinic:

Supplier of pure, natural, unadulterated essential oils, massage oils and aromatherapy products. We are proud to be a family owned and operated manufacturing and wholesaling business, based in Tauranga, New Zealand. We have been the trusted name in Aromatherapy for over 25 years!

Safety with Essential Oils - from the Dolphin Clinic:

When used properly essential oils and aromatherapy products are safe for the entire family (over 3 months of age).  Like all therapeutic treatments you need to apply common sense and follow a few simple precautions to ensure your safety and to get the desired effect.

Dilution
Essential oils are highly concentrated liquids and in most cases should not be applied direct to the skin. The exceptions are lavender, tea tree, nz manuka, and chamomile and even then only use a small amount and not on a continual basis.  Other oils may be used undiluted under the guidance of a healthcare professional only.  As a general rule dilute essential oils in a carrier oil in a ratio of 5 drops of essential oil per 10mls of carrier oil. Alternatively use one of our Massage Oils (e.g. Lavender and Chamomile) or Luxury Massage Oils (e.g. Pain Relief or Relaxation) which provide you with the essential oils already blended in a carrier oil at a safe ratio. You can see more information on dilution and application of essential oils by clicking here.

Babies and Young Children
Never use essential oils topically on babies under 3 months old (except under the guidance of a qualified therapist).  Always use in a more diluted form than the recommended adult dilution.  As a general rule dilute the essential oils 2 drops per 10mls carrier oil. Alternatively use our Luxury Baby Massage Oil which combines a blend of safe essential and carrier oils, which are effective in treating most childhood ailments, in the correct dilution. Avoid continual repetitive use.  Not more than 4-5 days in any week, unless in severe circumstances or under guidance of a healthcare professional.

Pregnancy
There are numerous oils and Dolphin Clinic products that help with the many and varied stages and ailments that can occur during pregnancy.

Avoid the following essential oils for the entire pregnancy:
Aniseed, Basil, Bay Laurel, Cedarwood, Cinnamon, Citronella, Clary Sage, Clove Bud, Coriander, Cypress, Fennel, Geranium, Jasmine, Juniper, Marjoram, Myrrh, Nutmeg, Peppermint, Rosemary, Sage and Thyme.

Avoid the following essential oils during the first trimester:
Chamomile, Eucalyptus, Frankincense, Lavender, Lemongrass, Pepper – Black, Pine and Rose.

Enjoy the other Dolphin Clinic essential oils and massage oils throughout the entire pregnancy with caution.

You can use any carrier or healing oil safely throughout the entire pregnancy.

Internal Use
We do not recommend any of our essential oils are taken internally.  It is much more effective for the essential oils to enter your blood stream through the skin than via your internal digestion which can sometimes destroy the therapeutic constituent(s) of the oil.

Techniques for using essential oils:

We hope this information from Dolphin Clinic will help simplify aromatherapy so you feel confident to use their essential oils.

Vaporise
4-8 drops as required into water if using a vaporiser or diffuser that contains water. Or use neat if using one of our Dolphin Clinic electric essential oil vaporisers.

Smell is often the first means by which people become accustomed to aromatherapy.  It is also one of the most effective and enjoyable.  Smell has a powerful effect on the mind and body and is the sense most often linked to memory.  Exactly how is still hotly debated. What we do know is inhalation is the quickest method by which essential oils enter the body and take effect.  The surrounding warm air carries the tiny molecules up the nose as we breath. When these pass over minute hairs called cilia a signal is transmitted from the receptor cells to the olfactory bulb and then to the limbic system in the brain. Various chemicals (including important hormones) are then released by the brain which effect the body mentally and/or physically.

Try one of our essential oil blends such as Decongestant, Tranquil Sleep, or Stress Less or make up your own blend (see details below on how to make your own blend).

Direct Inhalation

Put 3 or 4 drops of essential oil onto a tissue or handkerchief and gently inhale. For example, you can use on a handkerchief near your child's cot or bed or under the fitted sheet.

Bath
If you are making your own bath blend use 8 drops of essential oil per 10mls carrier oil (or even milk) to ensure the essential oils are dispersed throughout the water.

Bathing is one of the easiest and most therapeutic ways to enjoy aromatherapy. The heat from the water releases the essential oil molecules as well as opening the pores on your skin so the oils are easily absorbed.

Aromatic baths can provide relief from stress and anxiety, assist with muscle pains, or offer a sensual introduction to a romantic evening with your partner. For a wonderfully relaxing experience at the end of a busy day choose from any of the relaxing oils such as Chamomile, Clary Sage, Lavender, or Sandalwood or try one of our essential oil blends Stress Less, Sheer Bliss, or Exotic.

Alternatively you can use oils in the morning to give you an invigorating start to the day such as Orange, Rosemary or Grapefruit or one of our essential oil blends Breath of Fresh Air, Clarifying and Stimulating. See our recipes page for more ideas of essential oil blends for the bath.

Steam Inhalation - NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN.
Fill a large container with almost boiling water and add 4-5 drops of essential oil or essential oil blend. Lean over the bowl and breathe slowly and deeply for a few minutes until relief is felt. A towel may be placed over the head to help direct the vapours.

Used for centuries to help all respiratory tract problems, this method is a highly effective way to deliver essential oils and additional moisture into your system.

Take extreme care when using boiling water, not a suitable treatment for young children.
