This carrier is ideal for larger infants and offers a very supportive outward facing position for babies who are able to sit unassisted. The manufacturer states it can be used from 3.2kg/ newborn, but our Sleep Store Babywearing Consultants recommend waiting until closer to 3-4 months of age as there is quite a bit of bulk to the seat to correctly position under small newborn bottoms!

The Omni Classic is Ergobaby's basic carrier and it offers all carry positions and is easily adjustable. However if you wish to use your carrier from newborn we strongly recommend you get the Omni Deluxe (which can fit comfortably from 3-4 weeks with babywearing consultant advice and offers optimum support for smaller infants). The Omni Classic features a uniquely variable bucket seat which is easily adjusted as your baby grows. The seat supports your baby in the recommended hip-healthy 'M-Shape' seated position across all carry positions, including forward facing.

The Omni Classic ensures proper head and neck support for babies with the foldable and extendable integrated head and neck cushion plus a hood. It also includes lumbar support, extra-cushioned crossable shoulder straps and a detachable pouch perfect for keys and phone.

When is baby ready to face out? Every baby develops differently. You can start wearing your baby facing out once your baby demonstrates strong head and neck control, with his chin above the carrier body, and weighs 14 lbs minimum (6.4 kg). This is usually around 5 months. Do not use a pillow to prop baby up. Make sure to narrow the seat when baby is facing out: adjust the button seats to the inner grey buttons for the Omni Classic Cotton carriers, and adjust the slider adjustments to the inner setting (toward the center) for the Omni Classic Cool Air Mesh carriers. If baby gets sleepy or shows signs of over-stimulation, turn baby around to face you.

When is baby ready to be worn in the hip and back carry positions? Every baby develops differently. You can start using the hip and back carry once your baby demonstrates strong head and neck control, can sit unassisted, and weighs 17.2 lbs minimum (7.8 kg). This is usually around 6 months.

Questions?

Isn’t a front-facing carrier bad for baby’s hips?

Not when it is an ergonomically designed carrier where baby’s legs are maintained in the optimum, frog leg position. The Ergobaby Omni Classic has a unique bucket seat design, where baby sits in the carrier rather than the dangling style of traditional front packs.

Aren’t front packs uncomfortable for the wearer once baby is a bit heavier?

ergobaby carriers are comfortable and this is no exception. The waist band is very supportive and baby is held close to you rather than pulling you forward.

But don’t some people consider it over-stimulating for babies to face outwards?

We do not recommend that newborns face outwards, as they do not have either the neck strength to maintain that position and it is important to be able to easily view your newborn to ensure their airways remain open. It is also easy for newborns to get over-stimulated and over-tired when facing outwards. For these reasons and the design and sizing of the carrier, the forward facing position is suitable for babies 6-12 months.
