The Hiwa & Awa Co Okooko Pepi Baby Wrap Carrier is a beautiful carrier suitable to carry Pēpi from Newborn to 15kgs. Made from 100% jersey cotton, with a basic 1-way stretch, it’s soft, breathable and comfy for you and your pēpi. Designed to fit all sizes and every body.

Okooko Pēpi Baby Wrap Carrier is inspired by the traditional Māori practice of Te pīkau carrying pēpi close to māmā for warmth, connection, and protection. Keeping pēpi close supports emotional security, bonding, and brain development, while allowing hands-free movement throughout the day. Designed to reflect functionality this wrap is a modern take on an age-old tradition.

The Colours

Mã (beige/White) - Mā means “white” in te reo Māori. This wrap combines a calm white base with soft beige designs, symbolising purity, peace, and new beginnings. Just like the first light of dawn, it reflects the sacredness of new life and the gentle bond between māmā and pēpi.
Pounamu (green/black) - This colourway is inspired by pounamu (greenstone), a stone treasured in Māori culture. The green shades reflect the forests, rivers, and natural world that we all depend on. It reminds us of the importance of staying connected to nature for strength, healing, and balance.
Whero (Red/White/Black) - Whero means “red.” In te ao Māori, red represents life force, passion, and vitality. Combined with black and white, these colours reflect balance and whakapapa (our family connections across generations). This colourway celebrates strength and unity.
Hina (Grey/White) - Hina connects to the moon (marama) and the natural cycles of time. This soft grey and white colourway symbolises wisdom, reflection, and resilience. Like the moon's steady glow, it offers calm stability for māmā and pēpi.

The Kaupapa behind the designs
The Hiwa & Awa carrier design tells the story of māmā and pēpi through the maternity journey. The puhoro, embodying identity and connection, flows around the niho taniwha, a symbol of strength, resilience, and unity. Together, they represent the courage and unwavering support needed to welcome new life into te ao. Interwoven among the puhoro are unanahi, signifying health and abundance. These patterns collectively radiate the mana of haputanga and post-partum, carrying both tradition and purpose in every detail.

Please note a 1-way stretch wrap stretches across the width of the wrap only, not along the wrap like a Boba Wrap.
