What carry positions does Ergobaby support?

Whilst each Ergobaby carrier is different (eg, the Alta and the Embrace), the most popular Soft Structured Ergobaby Carriers generally support all carry positions below. Remember to check with the exact carrier style you're using or looking to purchase.

Front carry

If you're using your Ergobaby to carry a newborn this is the position you'll need and for babies up to 2 years it's the position you'll most likely keep coming back to. Having baby close and being able to easily kiss the top of their head can't be beat.

If you're carrying a newborn, the Ergobaby Embrace is the perfect option as it is soft, supportive and designed to be used with a newborn fitting until around one year of age. The Ergobaby Omni Classic and the Ergobaby Omni Deluxe fit once your baby is 4-6 weeks old and will last you well past two years of age. Older Ergobaby carriers needed additional infant inserts, but the newer models have been designed with an adjustable base to make fitting the carrier much quicker and easier.

Back carry

When baby is 6 months or older you can start to use the back carry position. While Back Carrying is one of the most liberating types of carries – it enables you to be hands free and keep the baby safely away from whatever you are doing – it seems to be one of the most daunting carries for parents. Back Carrying allows the parent to perform many tasks that would otherwise be difficult with a baby on the front.

Get some help while you practice getting your little one into the back carry position. It can be tricky to attempt first time round so practice over a soft surface, like the bed. Once you've mastered the technique, adjusted the straps and made sure baby is sitting well in the carrier you will find it's a liberating position to carry your child in.

Imagine how much easier it will be to get everyday things done with your baby safely and securely on your back, while she is still able to take in all the sights and sounds around her.

Baby Facing Out Carry

The baby facing out option can be used from around 6 months old and when baby has good head and neck control. Parents often like the facing out option so baby can see the same view as you are going about your day. It can be highly stimulating for babies, so is recommended to be used only in familiar environments.

Although the baby facing out position is one of the most commonly requested carry styles, in reality it is likely that you'll only be comfortably using this position for a short amount of time, often only 3-4 months over the total life of the carrier. This is because the weight of your growing baby can pull you forward, creating a strain on your back.

Ergobaby Carriers have been ergonomically designed with a frog-leg position for babies when sitting in the outward facing position and are safe to use in this position.

Side/Hip carry

When baby is 6 months or older the side carry position is possible. Side carrying with an Ergobaby involves some strap adjustment but once you've done it a couple of times it's straight forward to master.

This position is a good one for transitioning from front carry to back, you still get the closeness experienced with the front carry but a little more freedom to allow you to get on with everyday activities.

The hip carry position can be the least comfortable position over longer periods compared to the back and front carry and your little ones weight is carried and balanced on one side of your body more than the other.

Buying ergobaby second hand

Of all carrier brands, ergobaby is the one that suffers most from fake carrier being sold in New Zealand.  Marketplace in particular is filled with fake ergobaby carriers, often described as new in the box.  If you are considering a second hand ergobaby instead of purchasing new from The Sleep Store (an official ergobaby retailer since 2010), then a couple of tips are:

• If the price seems to good to be true, it's likely too good to be true!
• ergobaby are an expensive carrier and genuine carriers sell for high prices second hand, so lower prices are likely fake
• Ask a seller for proof the carrier was purchased from an authorised retailer. If they can't provide proof it was bought from a retailer then I would urge you to avoid the risk of buying an unsafe fake carrier that could put your baby in danger.
