Blind Cord Safety

Baby and child safety is very important to us here at The Sleep Store. So we are very happy to support the education campaign to raise awareness of the danger of cord blinds to New Zealand children.

6 children have died since 2009 from accidental strangulation by blind cords, so this is a real risk that parents need to be aware of.

Are your blinds child safe?

Where possible, safety advocates recommend choosing cordless options for your window coverings. So this basically means choosing curtains over blinds, so there's no need for cords to raise and lower blinds each day.

However if you already have blinds, or choose blinds for reasons such as they are better for dust mite allergy, it's essential that you take action to make your blind cords safe.

There's not currently any regulations or requirements for blinds to be installed using safety devices. In fact when I had blinds installed myself, the installer told me most people choose not to get the safety devices as they don't like the look of them....seriously!

However please choose safety for your children and ensure your blind cords are out of reach of your children at all times and you use a device to ensure that your blind cord can never be a strangulation hazard.
