Which high chair is best? Comparing the Hauck Alpha+ vs. the Stokke Tripp Trapp vs. the Mocka Original

If your baby is getting ready to start solids, then you’ll likely be looking for a high chair, so they can sit comfortably and safely whilst eating. But selecting the perfect high chair can be tricky as you look to balance safety, longevity, style and value.

And with prices ranging from less than $50 to over $500, how do you choose the best high chair for your needs? Let's compare three popular options, all available in New Zealand, which have similar features & style: the Hauck Alpha+, the Stokke Tripp Trapp, and the Mocka Original High Chair.

Hauck Alpha+ High Chair: Quality & Value for Money

Price: Priced between the Stokke Tripp Trapp and the Mocka Original, the Hauck Alpha+ offers the best value when longevity and inclusions are taken into consideration as this high chair can be used from baby right through to adulthood.

Materials: Crafted from solid FSC®-certified European beechwood, the Hauck Alpha+ is available in a range of colours to suit any home. It is both durable and timeless.

Adjustability: The Hauck Alpha+ is super-adjustable. For ergonomic comfort, the seat & footrest height are fully adjustable, so the chair can be configured for a range of sizes from baby through to toddlers, preschoolers and adults. For further comfort, padded seat cushions or seat reducers can be purchased separately and are a good way to support your little one when they're first starting solids. The high chair can be further customised with the high chair bouncer which is suitable for use from newborn, so you can bring your newborn up to table height when you're eating or cooking.

Three different trays are available depending on how you want to use your high chair. Choose from the wooden tray for a fixed option, 3 in 1 Removable Tray which has a built-in seat reducer or the Click tray, which can easily be removed for cleaning.

For fun & entertainment, this high chair has some clever added extras. Keep your baby entertained post-meal, or safely next to you whilst you cook, with the attachable play tray with a wide range of toys which can be attached to the tray. From sorting toys to musical toys & puzzles, there's a wide range of attachments to help your little one stay entertained.

Safety: The Hauck Alpha+ chair is weight rated to a generous 90kg. For the safety of younger children, a 5-point harness, bar & crotch strap is included in the base product, so you can use the basic high chair without added cost. It has been designed with a stable base to prevent tipping over, with integrated floor gliders meaning the high chair will simply glide backwards if your child was to push away from the table.

Why Choose Hauck Alpha+? For parents seeking a quality, high chair that is stylish, customisable and will stand the test of time, the Hauck Alpha+ is our recommended choice.

Stokke Tripp Trapp: Premium Design and Longevity

Price: The basic Stokke Tripp Trapp chair is a higher price, but offers a higher weight range than the Hauck Alpha+. The price does not include a 5-point safety harness, rail or backrest (unless purchased as a bundle), so if you plan to use this chair for a baby, these safety devices are an added cost of around $120, depending on where you purchase.

Materials: Made from FSC®-certified wood European beech or oak wood, the Tripp Trapp is available in a range of colours to suit any home.

Adjustability: An adjustable seat & footrest give this high chair comfort and longevity from baby to toddler through to adults (up to 136kg), but you will need added extras (baby set) to use this from baby. For added comfort, seat cushions can be purchased separately for a softer seat and the Tripp Trapp Tray can be purchased so the chair can be used as a stand-alone high chair rather than just at the table.

Like the Hauck Alpha+, the Tripp Trapp has a newborn set which can be purchased separately and attached to the basic chair, allowing you to bring your newborn to table height with the rest of the family as you eat or near the bench whilst you cook.

Safety: The Stokke Tripp Trapp chair is weight rated to 136kg - the highest weight range of these three chairs. It features a stable base with height adjustable seat and footrest for comfort. If you wish to use the Tripp Trapp for a younger baby, you'll need to purchase the baby set (for approximately $120), which includes a 5-point harness, backrest, rail and extended gliders to ensure it's safe for your little one.

Design: The Stokke Tripp Trapp is an Iconic Scandinavian design that has been loved for over 50 years. It fits seamlessly into modern interiors and is available in a range of colours.

  • Pros:
    - Grows with your child - can be used from birth (with newborn set, sold separately) up to adulthood (max weight of 136kg).
    - Built for safety and comfort with a stable base, adjustable seat and footrest. Highest weight limit compared to Hauck Alpha+ and Mocka.
    - Available in various finishes and colours (some colours may not be available in NZ).
    - Iconic and timeless design - loved in Europe for over 50 years

  • Cons:
    - Higher initial investment compared to other options.
    - Safety accessories (eg 5-point safety harness, rail and extended gliders) are sold separately, increasing the overall cost by approximately $120, depending on where you purchase.
  • - Tray is an added cost, but can be used at a table without a tray

Why choose the Stokke Tripp Trapp? For parents who want a stylish high chair in a range of colours with a high upper weight limit, the Stokke Tripp Trapp fits the bill.

Mocka Original High Chair: Functional & All-inclusive

Price: Mid-range, offering a balance between affordability and features. The Mocka Original High Chair price is all-inclusive with the 5-point harness, set of cushions and a safety strap included.

Materials: Constructed from PEFC certified beechwood, birchwood & poplar with a smooth finish. Currently available in two colours.

Adjustability: Features adjustable seat and footrest heights for comfort and longevity from baby to toddler. Seat cushions, which are included in the price, give the added comfort of a softer seat. The Mocka Original tray, which is also included is fully removable, allowing easy cleaning.

Safety: Sturdy, stable design. The Mocka Original includes a 5-point harness, set of cushions and a safety strap, so this chair can be safely used for baby from approximately 6 months of age. This chair has a weight limit of 20kg, which is the lowest of the three chairs we are comparing.

Design: The Mocka Original is a modern and minimalist design, similar to the Hauck and Stokke high chairs. It’s available in various colors to match your home.

  • Pros:
    - Good value for money with a simple, sturdy design
    - Stylish design that complements contemporary interiors.
    - Adjustable heights for comfort and to allow for growth.
    - Safety features (5 point harness and safety strap) are included
    - One price which includes a tray and seat cushions - no added extras.

  • Cons:
    - Weight limit of 20kg (around 5-6 years old), so it won’t have as much longevity compared to the Tripp Trapp or Alpha+
    - No additional extras such as a newborn set or play toys.

Why choose the Mocka Original High-Chair? For budget concious parents seeking a quality, high chair that can be used without added cost, the Mocka is a sensible choice.

Why We Think the Hauck Alpha+ Stands Out

While all three high chairs offer a quality product with unique features, the Hauck Alpha+ stands out for its:

Affordability: The Hauck Alpha+ offers excellent value for money without compromising on quality. The basic chair comes with a safety harness and bar, so it's safe to use from approximately 6 months old and it will last through to adulthood.

Durability: Solid beechwood construction ensures longevity.

Safety Features: Comes equipped with a 5-point harness and floor gliders, prioritising your child's safety from the get go.

Adjustability: Can be used from newborn (with accessories) right up to adulthood by adjusting the seat & footrest heights.

Added Extras: The Hauck has a wide range of customisable extras, including different trays, a bouncer which can be used from newborn, plus a play tray to which Hauck Play Toys can be attached - great entertainment at mealtimes or to have baby nearby whilst you're cooking.

In comparison, the Stokke Tripp Trapp, has a higher base price and requires additional purchases for full safety functionality (safety hardness & rail), increasing the overall cost. And, whilst the Mocka Original High Chair is affordable, stylish and practical, it doesn’t offer the longevity of Stokke and Hauck with its lower weight rating and fewer extras, such as different trays. Both the Stokke and Hauck win out with the newborn addition, despite being an added cost. Bringing your baby to the table from birth means they’re fully part of the family. Hauck also wins out on the additional accessories such as the toy tray and range of toys which can be purchased separately.

For parents seeking a reliable, safe, and stylish high chair that offers great value, the Hauck Alpha+ stands out as the top choice.
