Comparing Vaporisers, Humidifiers & Diffusers

Vaporisers, diffusers and humidifiers are great tools to help when little ones have a cold or cough and are finding it hard to breathe. We've refined our range over time so you can pick from the best selection available. Vaporisers, diffusers and humidifiers each offer a different way to disperse vapour into a room. So, depending on your needs, you may find one particular method more suitable than another.

Vaporisers are commonly used to help when coughs or colds make it difficult to breathe easily. In most instances a humidifier is the solution that most of our customers choose for this rather than a device that adds an aroma to the room but in certain situations a vaporiser or humidifier may be more appropriate. So what is the difference?

What is a Humidifier and What Does it Do?

A humidifier is a device that adds moisture to the air. If you are using a heater, heat pump or air conditioner in your home then the air can become very dry. Dry air can irritate the nose, throat and skin. Dry air can lead to tickly coughs, nose bleeds and dry skin. An ultrasonic humidifier creates a cool mist from water by using high-frequency sound waves. Cool mist humidifiers don't contain any heating elements, which means that there's no risk of burns and they're more energy efficient than vaporisers that use heat to disperse vapour. From the feedback we have received the cool mist from an ultrasonic humidifier tends to produce less condensation than a traditional vaporiser.

We've found an ultrasonic humidifier to be very useful if you have a cold, as the cool mist helps to open up the airways without the need for additional aromas. When dealing with coughing, and particularly those annoying tickly coughs, the cool mist helps to soothe the throat. If you or your little one has asthma then consult with your doctor for alternatives to a humidifier.

What is a Vaporiser?

A vaporiser creates vapour by heating a liquid or oil-infused pad. They are typically used with an essential oil blend and create an aroma dispersed through a warm watery vapour. Traditional vaporisers are often associated with condensation as the warm vapour condenses when it hits a cool surface like a window.

In addition to essential oil vaporisers like the one we stock from the Dolphin Clinic, we also have dry vaporisers like the Vaporeze. They use aroma-infused pads that are heated to disperse their aroma, and may be suitable in situations where a humidifier or diffuser isn't.

Other devices use high-frequency sound waves to produce the vapour from a water and essential oil mixture, like the Lively Living Aroma-Bloom and Crane Aroma Diffuser.

What is a Diffuser?

You can mix essential oils with a small amount of liquid amd use in a diffuser to create an aroma. Diffusers have a smaller capacity tank and don't put out enough moisture to offer the same benefits as a humidifier. They use the ultrasonic mist as a way to disperse the aroma of an essential oil that is added to the tank with water and often have additional features such as a built-in night light or ioniser.

Use the chart below to find the model that best suits your needs.

To get the most out of your vaporiser, diffuser or humidifier consider how you might use it. You may have different needs for other members of the family or perhaps you'd like to use it to scent a room with essentials oils other than decongestants.

FAQs

Why should I use an Ultrasonic Humidifier?

The real question is why shouldn’t you? Humidifiers add essential moisture to indoor air, which may relieve congestion from the common cold and flu and soothe scratchy throats, dry skin and eyes, and irritated sinuses. Perfect for babies, adults, and everyone in between, a humidifier’s additional moisture thins the mucus in the sinuses, which may make it easier to breathe. And we know that when it comes down to your family’s health, you’re all about breathing easy! Even if you’re feeling great, our Crane Humidifiers are must-haves. From smooth skin to shiny hair to cared-for furniture, they keep you and your home looking beautiful and feeling comfortable.

Ultrasonic Humidifier or Vaporiser?

Humidifier is the name in the US for what is usually called a Vaporiser in New Zealand and Australia. It is important to note that Crane Adorable, Drop, Droplet and Travel Humidifer/Vaporisers are cool mist Ultrasonic Vaporisers, not to be confused with warm mist or steam vaporisers. We use the terms Humidifer and Vaporiser interchangebly when referring to Crane products.

Which is Better: Warm Mist or Cool Mist?

The major difference is that a Warm Mist Humidifier is heating the water to produce steam vapour. Cool Mist Humidifiers use an Ultrasonic Nebuliser that vibrates at a very high frequency to produce an extra fine water mist. When it comes to humidifying a room, there is not much of a difference between the two types - both are equally effective. However, paediatricians and parents alike recommend Cool Mist Humidifiers for babies and children because there is no heating element, which could be a safety risk for a child. Cool Mist Humidifiers can also save money on energy costs.

Is the size of the water tank it uses important?

Yes, if you want the vaporiser to keep working all night without having to refill. The larger the tank the longer the humidifer will keep producing cool mist vapour between refills. The Crane Drop and Adorable humidifiers can run up to 24 hours on a single 3.8L tank of water. The smaller 1.9L Droplet runs for up to 15hours. The Essentials in a Box Vaporiser has a much smaller 250ml tank and runs for almost 8 hours and about the same time as the Mini Travel Humidifier . The Crane Drop, Droplet & Adorable humidifiers also output a greater volume of cool mist vapour which makes them suited to small and large rooms.

Can I use Crane Aromatherapy Scents with my Crane Vaporiser?

Yes. Crane Aromatherapy scents are non-oil based aromas designed to be used with Crane vaporisers. These are a good solution if you would like to add an aroma to the cool mist generated by the Crane ultrasonic vaporiser.

Can I use Essential Oils with my Crane Vaporiser?

No. It is the cool mist produced by water alone in the Crane Vaporisers that is designed to provide relief for dry coughs, nasal congestion, and croup. Pediatricians recommend cool mist to relieve cold and flu symptoms, soothe the throat and reduce swelling. Using oils is not required for the Crane humidifier to be effective in relieving these symptoms, and not recommended as over time oils will degrade the plastic and interfere with the operation of the ultrasonic membrane. For this reason we recommend that oils NOT be used with Crane humidifiers. A glass or ceramic diffuser is more suited for use with oils.

Crane have recently released Crane Aromatherapy Scents. These are non-oil based aromas that can safely be added to Crane humidifiers without any risk of damaging the unit and which enable them to emit an aroma. Currently three scents are available: Focus, Soothing & Energy. Find out more here.

Can Newborns benefit from an ultrasonic humidifier?

Newborns are Obligate Nasal Breathers, meaning that they can only breathe in through their nose for the first 4-6 months of their lives. Their nostrils are so small that even the tiniest clog can make everything from feeding to sleeping difficult and frustrating. Perhaps more importantly, the American Academy of Pediatrics advises against using over the counter cold medication for children under the age of 6. For these reasons, paediatricians recommend using Cool Mist Humidifiers without essentials oils to relieve cold and flu symptoms in children.

What’s the Best Way to Clean my Crane Drop, Droplet or Adorable Humidifier?

It’s simple. Regular cleaning will keep your humidifier running smoother, for longer. We highly recommend emptying the water tank and basin after each use and disinfecting them at least once a week with water and a few capfuls of white vinegar. Please check the Manual for further instructions.

Do I need a Filter to run my Crane Drop, Droplet or Adorable Humidifier?

Nope. We’re all about simple, clean design, so our humidifiers work perfectly without a filter. One might be necessary if you notice a fine white dust collecting near your Adorable. If so you can also switch to distilled water to lower the dust-building mineral content. Crane Demineralization Filters remove excess minerals, reducing the white dust so your air (and your home) stays clean.

Crane Ultrasonic Humidifier

Humidifiers like our range from Crane add essential moisture to indoor air, are designed to relieve congestion from the common cold and flu and soothe scratchy throats, dry skin and eyes, and irritated sinuses. Perfect for babies, adults, and everyone in between, a humidifier’s additional moisture thins the mucus in the sinuses, which may make it easier to breathe. And we know that when it comes down to your family’s health, you’re all about breathing easy!

Crane humidifiers come in a range of shapes and with a larger than average tank capacity. This allows the machine to operate for longer without being refilled. You can rest easy knowing that the machine isn't going to run out of vapour halfway through the night. When they finally do run out of water they have an auto-off function.

The vapour they emit is easily adjustable, so you can find the right balance for your room to keep breathing easy and comfortable.

The Crane Travel Humidifier offers one level of vapour output. It can be used in the car, or anywhere near a power outlet using the supplied USB adaptor or plugged into an USB port. It comes with a cup that the device sits in but it can also easily sit in a standard glass of water, to save valuable luggage space.

Crane Aromatherapy Diffuser

The Crane Aromatherapy Diffuser is designed to be used with Crane Scents or Essential Oils to add an aroma to the air rather than be used as an ultrasonic humidifier that generates a cool mist water vapour.

The Crane Diffuser uses a specially designed ultrasonic membrane to diffuse the scents or oils that are placed in it rather than heating them as traditional diffusers do. It also lights up in a range of colours that it can cycle through or if you have a colour you prefer from the range available you can select that too.

Discreet and with hidden switches the Crane Diffuser is designed to enhance any room decor and be there when needed. Its intricately patterned white ceramic body sits between the bamboo base and top. The video below shows a slightly different looking version of the aroma diffuser from the one that is available.

Vapor-eze Vaporiser

The Vapor-Eze Vaporiser/Aromatherapy Unit uses the latest in heat activation and aromatherapy technology, which may provide relief from respiratory symptoms (allergy, asthma, bronchitis, colds, flu, coughs, sore throats, and sinusitis). This is a waterless vaporizer so there is no water for mold spores or bacteria to grow in. This may be safer for those suffering from allergies, asthma, bronchitis, colds and flu, coughs, sore throats, and sinusitis.

The Vaporiser/Aromatherapy Unit has been designed to use no-mess replaceable pads that are filled with a carefully formulated blend. Each pad will last for six to ten hours, depending on the setting used during operation (low, medium or high). Five long lasting pads are supplied with each vaporiser.

Dolphin Clinic Vaporiser

Simply plug in, turn on, place 8-10 drops of Dolphin Clinic Pure Essential Oil(s) into the top recess and enjoy the aroma. The vaporiser will take up to 15 minutes to reach full temperature. Depending on the essential oils chosen the aroma will last from 1 - 6 hours. You can leave the vaporiser on all the time. Just add more essential oils when you want to increase the aroma again.
